Ronel Furious over Hamilton Signing,
Then Signs Boedker
Then Signs Boedker
TFHN - Daniel Ronel, Oct. 24
Hamilton, ON • On Wednesday, Blazers owner/GM Daniel Ronel believed he had sealed the deal on a mid-season addition. He had a press conference scheduled for 5:00 PM Thursday, where the contract would be signed live. However, at 8:00 AM on Thursday, the to-be addition cancelled both the press conference and contract. At 12:09 AM (Thursday), he was already off the market.
The player, Filip Forsberg, had signed with the Hamilton Huskies for the 2014-15 season, cashing him $1.1M.
Owner Adam Sharvit was thrilled with GM Jon Baloney's addition. Today he told TFHN, "I feel as if the addition of Forsberg to the team could be a very strong one. Right now he is playing C as a backup role for the team and could end up shifting over to LW. [In the AFHL and FHL] he has 7 points in 7 games, and is looking like a potential rookie of the year candidate with a plus-9 rating. [There are] big things to come for Forsberg. Maybe not this year, but he will be a big part of the future of the Hamilton Huskies."
In his debut with the Sharvit squad last night, the bright novice notched two assists against the Red Deer Blades.
It was not until the game begun, when Ronel (whose team took the night off) turned on the TV to the HAM-RD game, and saw a sparkling-red jersey staring at him, 'FORSBERG' sticking out in bold white lettering on the back. "I nearly broke the couch," Ronel admits, earlier today at a conference. "The sad thing is I'm not even kidding. I literally flipped over my couch.
"It was like a slap in the face. He didn't tell me that there were others looking for his services. He was very vague in cancelling [the contract and conference], and spoke for a very short amount of time yesterday. His agent uses cheap, unpalatable negotiation tactics to benefit himself and his client. Filip, I suggest you fire him as soon as possible if you wish to maintain a positive image in the YGFHL."
Claus Elefalk, Forsberg's agent, fired back with the following tweet:
"Envy. It's just envy. When someone works their butt off and beats you to the punch, you have every right to be upset. But only at yourself, not at others. I do what's beneficial for me and my players. Not for you. You do for you. Not me. Good luck Filip #GoGetEm" - @elefalk, 1:47 PM Oct. 24.
During today's conference, Ronel revealed that defenseman Matt Niskanen was placed on retroactive waivers to create roster space for Mikkel Boedker, whose signing with Seattle was also revealed. The contract terms are 3 years and $7.11M ($2.37M per year). It is believed Boedker was Ronel's backup to Forsberg. More on the story later.
